The Fascination with Elon Musk: Why Deepfake Scams Favor Celebrities?
On Nov 2024, a 62-year health worker saw a Facebook Ad for an investment opportunity. After multiple exposure to the Ad in social media platforms and TikTok, she thought that it might be a smart cryptocurrency investment. She contacted the company behind the Ads and opened an account for over $10,000. Weeks later, she spoke to CBS News about how she had been scammed. Looking back at those videos, she maintains that it looks convincing even though she now knows it was a deepfake. She was quoted by CBS saying, “They still look like Elon Musk. They still sound like Elon Musk.”
